The Kooks, Hull City Hall, Hull 4th Oct 2011

After a very busy festival season, gig season has finally started. First show the Kooks at Hull City Hall reminded me of the difficulties of shooting indoors;

  • Low lighting
  • Narrow pits
  • High stages
  • Strobe lighting

Support bands for the night where Lonsdale Boys Club & Tribes, unfortunately the lighting guy decided to flood the stage with green from the back of the stage & red lighting to the front making photography near impossible & fruitless, also the front of stage had a walk way added, meaning only head shots of the lead singer where possible from the narrow pit, this did not make me confident for the main act.

Thank fully Luke Pritchard is a very experienced front man, coming out armed with guitar,

the lighting was drastically changed to low background lighting & lovely white lighting from the front with just a hint of red.

For the second song Luke removed his guitar & became the classic front man, using the added walkway to entice the crowd into singing long with him.

By the end of the third song Luke was reaching out to his fans & I nailed this final shot with the Pentax k-5 with the Pentax DA* 50-135mm lens

Project 35 on the 35mm on K-5

whilst wondering around Alchemy festival this year I was surprised at the diverse range of people attending this year. Past Alchemy Festivals I guess you can say have been a little clichéd with more than its fair share of hippies & travellers, not that thats a bad thing. So this year I was really pleased with the people attending Alchemy Festival. So in between bands I decided with my new Pentax k-5 & Pentax DA 35mm f/2.4 to do a little project. 35 portraits of random people at Alchemy Festival to show the diversity of people attending.

Bingley Music Live 2011, Myrtle Park, 3-4th September

After Dolly Parton I drove the 90 minutes to Bingley for one of my favourite festivals, Bingley Music Live. This is the fourth time I have covered BML & the lineup never disapoints with a mixture of unsigned, newly signed, modern & retro acts, everyone is well catered for. Saturday’s highlight was the fantastic Dione Bromfield, her voice really is superb live & from such a small package, its hard to believe that she is still only 15 years old. After her set I managed to get a few moments to capture some portraits, which I am well pleased with.
